Dust, Needle, Groove: An Ode to Record Stores

To the keepers of quiet revolutions—
who stand behind counters worn smooth
by decades of fingertips and transactions,
who catalogue not just music
but memories—

Thank you.

For the bell on the door that rings
like a chorus beginning,
for the scent of cardboard sleeves and vinyl dust,
for the handwritten dividers—Folk, Punk, Metal, and More—
for the patience of listening
when someone says:
“I don’t know the name, but it sounds like…”
you are the custodians of stubborn beauty,
in an age that forgot how to hold things.

You press sound into hands—weighty, circular, real—
and remind us that music’s not a file
it’s a ritual:
the feel in your fingertips,
lowering the needle,
the soft crackle and pop,
the wait before the first track begins.

Here’s to you,
architects of our sanctuaries,
guardians of sound and memory,
advocates of community and belonging,
believers in the long way around.

May your doors keep ringing,
your crates keep yielding treasure,
your turntables keep spinning stories,
we didn’t know we needed,
until we heard them in your care.

Thank you—
for holding the groove steady,
as the rest of the world skips.

The Record Keepers would not have been possible without the participation of record store owners across Canada. I’m grateful to all the shop owners and staff, and those customers who lingered as we chatted and shared their own stories. You were generous with your time and supportive of this project. Thank you for letting me hang out, for entrusting me with your stories, and introducing me to some fantastic new music along the way.

The Record Keepers can be purchased online and delivered to your door. But do yourself a favour—visit a participating record store and buy a copy from them, and get some new records while you’re at it.
